I have watched the de-elect emerson campaign in the Vancouver/Kingsway riding with great interest since David Emerson crossed the floor from the Liberals to the Conservatives. I sympathize with the outcry. In our parliamentarian system the voters have two minds: the person and the party. However I question the direction of the de-elect emerson crusade. Would democracy be better served by changing the law regarding switching parties? Even after Stronach crossed the floor I was surprised at how quickly discussion regarding new legislation disappeared. In the Emerson case it rarely enters public discussion. "Stealing votes" could be dealt with by legislated policy that forced a "by-election" in the riding of the person who changes parties. Therefore the mind of the voters–whether for party or person–could be sorted out at the polls. Why isn’t this part of the discussion by those committed to democracy? I may well be missing something, so please help me on this note.
