new questions for group bible study
The study of God’s word is essential to our growth as followers of Jesus. Though I and every believer must pursue God’s Word on their own, I believe God engages the gifts of the Spirit and the moments of people’s life experience best for transformation when the church studies together. I am always looking for new ways to approach the flow of thought related to group bible study. When writing studies I have often used “hook, book, look, took” as an approach. Carol Davis shared that with us years ago as well as these six questions:
1. What did you like?
2. What did you not like?
3. What did you not understand?
4. What did you learn about God?
5. What do you need to do about?
6. Which verse would you like take with you to reflect, pray about, and adjust your life to this week?
Glen Johnson writes at TheResurgence of “The Delta Model of Biblical Application.” He suggest working the flow of a study through the following questions which move through three areas–understanding, application, and evaluation:
1. What is the will of God? (Understanding)
2. In the light of God’s will, what is He like? (Understanding)
3. What are practical ways that we can put the will of God into practice? (Application)
4. In light of God’s will, what are practical ways that we can blow it? (Application)
5. What thoughts are revealed by these actions? (Analysis)
6. What beliefs about God are revealed by these actions? (Analysis)
7. How are you doing in this area? (Evaluation)
Johnson has an excellent article availble at this link on the Delta Model.
