You know church should be more fun. Yesterday was a fun day for me with Cityview. Before his baptism, Damian painted such a compelling picture for us from the time he was five years old of our common need for a saviour. I heard several people tell again his picture of two hills-one with himself and the other with golden treasure representing heaven, and then hell’s flames in the gap between with the cross of Jesus bridging the gap. This is not the common language of a scientist. Damian’s faith in God and his obedience to Jesus in the sacrifical ways that he and his wife Eva live encourage me so much. I must say too, that Dave’s baptism was very exciting too. We have known Dave for over 10 years; his love and loyalty to Jesus came out so much yesterday as he did something he was totally nervous about–climb into the water to confess that “Jesus is Lord,” and to express thanks to all who have shared the journey with him. On his way down in the water he jokingly raised his fist at me and said that I’d better lift him out–that’s a first for me. Dave was so nervous, but his love for Jesus as his saviour and Lord was more compelling. And that is how it should remain in our lives–Followers of Jesus are capitvated by the sacrificial love of Christ through the Holy Spirit and therefore are empowered to push past the dissenting voices into obedience to Jesus. When we fail to obey Jesus its evidence that we are not fully enjoying the realities of the Gospel–namely His love.
