I thoroughly enjoyed the CBC production Prairie Giant, The Tommy Douglas Story. I was inspired and provoked by this former baptist minister who was instrumental in leading Saskatchewan into so many “firsts” as a province. The story of his influence and the battles fought to bring health care to Canadians is a great reminder to us of the BIG IDEA behind what we enjoy. I’m left with several questions to muse over: Have we forgotten to keep telling the story of WHY (i.e. the BIG IDEA) we have universal health care in Canada? Where have principled, passionate, lay-down-your-life- voices and lives gone from our political arenas?
